Goodbye to shrink film

Packaging manufacturer Smurfit Kappa explains that more and more companies are interested in a sustainable replacement for shrink film for multipacks.

Smurfit Kappa, by its own account the market leader in packaging solutions, launched the “Better Planet” packaging initiative in 2018, and is working on a portfolio of products to replace shrink film. This starts with the innovative Nor-Grip solution. The Nor-Grip corrugated board solution, manufactured in an automatic packaging line, safely bundles products such as large bottles in consumer-friendly units, so that shrink film is no longer required.

A recent study found that 75 per cent of consumers prefer the Nor-Grip product to plastic shrink film. In view of the global trend towards sustainability, a growing number of international companies are turning to Smurfit Kappa to offer recyclable alternatives to disposable plastics such as shrink film. The Nor-Grip product is suitable for many products that are typically sold in large bottles, such as soft drinks, edible oil, bottled water and detergents. The product has undergone numerous rigorous tests to ensure that it is strong enough to carry even the heaviest loads through all aspects of the supply chain, says Smurfit Kappa. In addition, corrugated board provides an ideal basis for high-quality print to effectively present brands in the store.

Smurfit Kappa also develops and tests numerous additional products, such as the sister product “Sleever”, which is used for smaller packages such as bottled beer and canned food. These products will supplement the shrink film portfolio for multipacks in the coming months.

Arco Berkenbosch, Vice President of Innovation & Development at Smurfit Kappa, explains: “The Nor-Grip solution is one of the most popular products gaining additional presence through our Better Planet Packaging initiative. In the last few months, we’ve received a lot of customer inquiries. This is an excellent example of a sustainable packaging solution that can be implemented immediately.”
