Companies from Germany Triumph at WorldStar Awards

Companies from Germany, Austria and Switzerland won a total of 45 awards at the WorldStar Packaging Awards 2022 hosted by the World Packaging Organization (WPO). Germany leads the country ranking with 28 winners.

A nice triumph at the end of the year 2021: Companies from Germany were able to collect a particularly large number of „stars“ at the WPO’s WorldStar Packaging Awards 2022. They lead the country ranking with 28 winners. They are followed by Australia & New Zealand (27), Japan (23) and China (15). Austria can celebrate 14 winners, Switzerland three. 23 WorldStar winners had qualified for the WorldStars by winning a German Packaging Award 2021. In total, the starting field comprised 440 entries from 37 countries.

Sustainability and convenience in the foreground

„The top focus of entries for WorldStar 2022 included sustainability and convenience, as well as post-Covid 19 trends such as hygiene, e-commerce and wellness,“ says Soha Atallah, WPO coordinator and Vice President, Conferences, Exhitibions, and Awards, summarizing the results of the competition. WPO President Pierre Pienaar also points out that „sustainability remains a key factor and has no alternative when it comes to packaging design.“ At the same time, he says, the judges were excited by how design and graphics are being used to enhance the consumer experience.

Among the winning innovations are mono-material packaging with 100 percent recycled content, transport packaging made of corrugated board with spring absorption effect, and packaging material made from direct CO2 recycling. Companies that have won a WorldStar include Werner & Merz and Alpla, for example, which in collaboration have succeeded in increasing the proportion of recyclate from the yellow bag in PET bottles to 50 percent. The complete list of winners can be found on the WPO homepage.
