Packaging success after first cocoa harvest

The chocolate manufacturer Alfred Ritter GmbH & Co. KG has won the German Packaging Award in the Designing and Processing category with its Limited Edition “First Harvest”. The company presents the milk chocolate with 54 per cent cocoa content in digitally printed packaging.

In November 2018, Ritter Sport launched a 100-gram bar limited to a run of 30,000 to mark the first harvest from its own plantation in Nicaragua. The item was called “First Harvest”. To emphasise this special feature, the decision was made to use secondary packaging in the form of a folded box printed on both sides and in the shape of an envelope. This enhances the quality of the product and communicates background information. Both concept and design impressed the jury of the German Packaging Award.

Ritter Sport produced the packaging for the limited edition of the “First Harvest” using digital printing for flexible packaging at DFP Solution GmbH in Stolberg near Aachen. For very small quantities of packaging, digital printing offers the greatest benefits in demand-oriented and cost-effective production. “In the launch phase of the new cocoa class in test markets, the rapid implementation with digital printing meets the criteria for time-to-market and speedy repeat batches when sales increase and shelves need to be  quickly restocked,” explains HP Deutschland GmbH in the newsletter for brands and agencies.
