Nestlé Wins Sustainability Award with Smarties

Smarties wins the Packaging Europe Sustainability Award. The confectionery brand received the award in the recyclable packaging category at this year’s FACHPACK.

The Smarties packaging is made of recyclable paper, paper labels, or cardboard. The paper stems from sustainable cultivation. For fans of the colorful “chocolate lentils”, on the product packaging, the brand demonstrates how to properly dispose of the Smarties wrappers. The colorful brand also scored points with the scope of the conversion. The Sustainability Award jury was made up of 46 experts.

With the introduction of the new garb across the range, Smarties is the first global confectionery brand to use recyclable paper packaging, according to manufacturer Nestlé. The new Smarties range replaces 250 million pieces of plastic packaging each year. That equates to 400 tons of plastic no longer being used worldwide, the company said.

“We are proud of the award and pleased to see Smarties paper packaging recognized in the industry,” said Bernd Büsing, Head of Corporate Packaging at Nestlé Germany. “Packaging products in recyclable paper is not easy. The new solution for Smarties is the result of many years of research. We even changed the iconic shape of the giant roll to hexagonal, because paper as a packaging material requires it. The change at Smarties is an important step on our way to more sustainable packaging and meeting our packaging commitments.”
