Amazon Wants to do Away with the Barcode

Online retailer Amazon wants to do away with the barcode in favor of a camera system, US media report.

According to etailment.de, the US news channel CNBC reports that Amazon wants to abolish the barcode. The reason for this is that the robots used in its warehouses, often have difficulty finding barcodes because they are placed in different locations. The camera system, called multi-modal identification, is already being used in Amazon’s logistics warehouses in the Netherlands and Spain, among others. The problem is fundamental, Amazon says. Packages without barcodes could be delivered to customers faster and more accurately.
