Less Plastic at Rewe
Less plastic waste again, in this case no less than 69 tons per year: Rewe is dispensing with the additional plastic lid on certain private label cups. As an alternative, reusable lids made of platinum silicone will be available for purchase.
Starting in March, Rewe will be dispensing with the additional plastic lid on all 500-gram cups of natural yogurt and, from April, on all 500-gram cups of soy yogurt under its “ja!” and “Rewe Beste Wahl” private labels. In this way, Rewe is saving around 69 tons of plastic waste per year. For those who need a permanently reusable closure for opened cups, Rewe sells food-safe and dishwasher-safe reusable lids made of platinum silicone. Two pieces are available for 0.99 euros.
Another step in the sustainability strategy
By the end of 2030, Rewe aims to avoid, reduce or make more environmentally friendly all private label sales packaging and service packaging wherever possible. By the end of 2025, all plastic packaging for Rewe’s own brands that cannot be avoided is to be recyclable. In addition, Rewe aims to use a total of 20 percent less plastic in its private label packaging by the end of 2025.
Certified raw materials are already used as far as possible for paper packaging. The company emphasizes that it has taken a pioneering role in the industry in, among other things, the abolition of plastic bags, disposable plastic tableware and plastic packaging for organic fruit and vegetables, and the introduction of reusable fresh nets.
