Netto now sells milk in returnable bottles too
Available everywhere in the past, now the exception – milk in glass bottles. The Netto Marken-Discount supermarket chain aims to change this and is now selling regionally produced milk in more environmentally friendly returnable glass bottles in large parts of southern Germany.
By comparison with the widely used non-returnable beverage cartons or PET bottles, returnable glass bottles are the much more sustainable solution, explains Netto Marken-Discount, an Edeka subsidiary. In addition, thanks to the partnerships with milk suppliers from the region, the short transport routes also help to protect the climate and the environment. Netto is now selling fresh Franconian farm milk with a 3.8% fat content in the more sustainable one-liter returnable glass bottles in around 240 stores in northern Bavaria and eastern Hesse. In addition, Netto customers in large areas of Baden-Württemberg can buy the fresh Black Forest pasture milk with a 3.8% fat content in the one-liter returnable glass bottle. The article is available in around 160 Netto stores between Stuttgart, Freiburg im Breisgau and Lake Constance.
“Multiple use of packaging and transport containers is always the better choice. Wherever possible, we therefore look for ways to increase reusability in our range. We have long been a leader for beverages in the food discount segment. Milk is now being added regionally. Our reusable commitment also includes reusable nets for transporting loose fruit and vegetables, reusable boxes for fresh meat and sausage products and various reusable shopping bags,” says Christina Stylianou, Head of Netto Corporate Communications.

The topic of regionality plays an important role in the sustainable product range orientation of Netto Marken-Discount stores and is reflected in many different product groups. The cooperation with regional partners includes not only fruit and vegetable producers, but also farmers, bakeries, breweries and mineral springs.
