State Award for Innovative Packaging Solutions

PAWEL Packing & Logistics GmbH, ALPLA Werke Alwin Lehner GmbH, and “Hey Sister! Packaging Design” are the winners of the Austrian State Prize Smart Packaging 2022. The prize was awarded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Economics and the Federal Ministry of the Environment during the Austrian Packaging Day in Vienna.

Every two years, the Federal Ministry of Labor and Economy (BMAW), in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation, and Technology (BMK), awards a state prize to forward-looking, innovative achievements in the packaging sector. This is intended to strengthen international competitiveness as well as to serve as a role model for Austria’s economy.

The purpose of the competition, organized by the Austrian Institute for Packaging (ÖIV), is to do justice to the increasing importance of holistic, comprehensive solutions in the packaging sector and to recognize exemplary, integral packaging developments by individual companies. At the same time, the aim is to draw attention to the diverse functions of packaging in order to raise awareness of its economic importance.

In the “B2B” category, PAWEL packing & logistics GmbH received the award for its “reusable packaging for railcar seats.” The jury of experts explained: “This reusable packaging was optimally adapted to the transported seats and, with many details such as foldable side walls, was designed for 2.5 years of use. What makes this reusable design special is the fine tuning of product and use.”

In the “B2C” category, according to the jury, “the modern Vöslauer returnable PET bottle” by ALPLA Werke Alwin Lehner GmbH excellently fulfills the signs of the times, which point to returnable bottles. This task is fulfilled by the bottle, which remains true to the timeless Vöslauer design. The high material savings and the lightness speak for themselves.

In the “Branding” category, according to the jury, the “Ice Cream Party Box” by “Hey Sister! Packaging Design” brings summer into the house. The clear signature of the design underlines the theme and presents the contained products particularly beautifully.

Special awards for digitalization and innovation

As part of the Smart Packaging State Prize, the special prizes “Digitization” and “Innovation” were awarded. From the submissions to the State Prize, the jury awarded the “Special Prize Digitization 2022” for the best project on the topic of digitization. Submissions for t2022Special Prize Innovation 2022”  also included designs, models, prototypes, concepts, and student research projects for products and design concepts that have not yet been realized but are promising in economic, environmental, and sociopolitical terms. A special prize winner was selected from each of the finalists by the expert jury.

  • The special “Digitization” prize went to the online store ‘die-verpackungs-druckerei.com’ by the offset printing company Schwarzach GmbH.
  • The special “Innovation” prize was awarded to “GreenPack”, which is used by Österreichische Post AG. The design comes from “FH Oberösterreich – Logistikum Stey “.
  • A special prize from Altstoff Recycling Austria (ARA) went to and-less GmbH for :Mehrweg mit Mehrwert – wiederverwendbare To Go Verpackungslösung für Gastronomie, Lieferservice & Handel” (a returnable and reusable Packaging solution for gastronomy, doof delivery services and retail).
