DS Smith Sweeps Up Awards

DS Smith won the WorldStar Award, the highest accolade in the international packaging industry, no less than five times. The innovative solutions from Germany and Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, and Hungary convinced the jury throughout Europe.

The WorldStar competition is one of the most important events of the World Packaging Organization (WPO) and the most significant international award in the field of packaging. The WPO jury only evaluates packaging concepts that have already won awards in national competitions. Five entries from DS Smith are now among the winners, selected from 440 entries from 37 countries around the world. The official award ceremony will take place in May 2022 at Ipack Ima in Milan.

Multi-use wins

DS Smith’s winners from Germany and Switzerland: the Bubeck e-commerce packaging that becomes a dog basket won in the Pet Food category. As a goodie for its online customers and their four-legged pets, for a short time, Bubeck Petfood delivered its wide range of dog food and accessories in a special shipping packaging by DS Smith. The bottom part of the packaging can be converted into a practical hexagonal dog basket made of corrugated cardboard in just a few simple steps using the “do it yourself” method.

Recycling scores points

The Bübchen Skincare sustainability display was the winner in the Health and Personal Care category. For maximum attention at the POS, the display was designed as an XXL version of the iconic Bübchen bottle. The display body made of natural brown corrugated cardboard consists of 100 percent recycled material. The mono-material solution made of corrugated cardboard can be completely recycled and thus preserves valuable raw material.

The display construction has the necessary stability to support the products without the need for plastic. Assembly and packaging are extremely simple thanks to the pre-glued body: at the retailer, all that is needed is to pull off the hood and the sale can begin. The brand-appropriate sales display was already worthy of an award from the jury of the German Packaging Award in the category of product presentation.

From Finland, the Palpa Twist Recycling Container was the winner in the Other category. Based on customer needs, DS Smith has developed a new recycling container. The empty container is shipped to retailers who collect empty cans and PET bottles in a special filling machine that collects the cans and bottles for recycling. When transported flat, the container fits on a Euro pallet. This new innovative container is ready for use in just 30 seconds thanks to its sealed bottom flaps and manually locked top structure.

User-friendliness convinces

A user-friendly packaging for door handles used in Denmark was awarded in the Packaging Materials and Components category and in the Transit category. This packaging for door handles is a user-friendly solution that combines all the necessary parts in one package. The packaging design is simply constructed and easy to handle. Another benefit: the user can easily calculate how many door handles are left in the package. This packaging solution has also already won the ScanStar.
