New Cheese Packaging is Fully Recyclable

Packaging group Mondi has teamed up with cheese packaging company Hazeleger Kaas to package the well-known Dutch brand Maaslander in EnvelopeForm, a new, fully recyclable polypropylene (PP) mono-material packaging.

Most sliced cheese in the Netherlands is still packaged in mixed material films, which are difficult to recycle. This new packaging features a PP top and bottom film for thermoforming applications and a PP label instead of a paper label, making the new solution fully recyclable. The packaging has been certified as recyclable by the German institute cyclos-HTP.

“When we started looking for a new sustainable solution in 2018, our standards were already very high. To keep our cheese fresh, the packaging had to offer the same barrier protection as the previous film while being lighter in weight. Mondi worked very closely with us to try and test the best packaging solutions. Ultimately, the lighter film and improved product-to-packaging ratio allowed us to reduce the amount of plastic used by 23 percent. This allows us to save 9.2 tons of plastic per year”, says Andre Roeterdink, Procurement Manager at Hazeleger Kaas.

“The new mono-material film is recyclable, works well with their machines, and keeps the cheese slices fresh on the shelf. Together with our commitment to quality, we were able to offer Hazeleger a sustainable new solution”, said Peter Jagt, Regional Sales BeNeLux Consumer Flexibles, Mondi.
