The jury of the German Packaging Award 2021 has announced the winners of the major European showcase of achievements in packaging. A total of 52 innovations from six countries came out on top in the competition of the best solutions organized by the German Packaging Institute (dvi).
A wooden transport pallet for tractor front loader swings by the company G. Gühring GmbH & Co.KG Verpackungstechnik is among the 52 innovations honored with the German Packaging Award 2021. The German Packaging Institute (dvi) announced this year’s winners on its website on July 27, 2021. The award ceremony will take place on September 28, 2021, during FACHPACK in Nuremberg. The German Packaging Award is an international, cross-industry and cross-material competition and the largest European showcase of achievements in packaging. It is held under the patronage of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy. Every year, the dvi awards the prize to innovative and creative solutions ranging from seemingly small but groundbreaking details to fundamental innovations. The German Packaging Award is aimed at designers, developers, manufacturers and users of packaging solutions and machinery, as well as the creative newcomers to the industry. Winners of the packaging award simultaneously nominate themselves for the WorldStar of the World Packaging Organization (WPO).
“The packaging industry is and remains a highly innovative and creative sector,” emphasizes Dr. Bettina Horenburg, Director Corporate Communications at Siegwerk Druckfarben and Member of the Board and overall responsible for the German Packaging Award at the German Packaging Institute. “As the organizer of Europe’s largest showcase of achievements in all aspects of packaging, we were not only pleased with the large number of innovations submitted, which was around 25 percent higher than the previous year. The quality of the solutions is also remarkable. Our 24-member jury who work in business, research and academia literally had their hands full at their two-day meeting reviewing every submission,” says Horenburg.
Cost reduction for packaging materials
The 52 winning innovations were spread across all ten categories of the showcase – from digitalization to design and finishing, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness to packaging machinery and technology. Four prizes were also awarded in the newcomer category. Solutions made of plastic, paper, cardboard, corrugated board, wood, aluminum, glass, and composite board can be found. The prize winners come from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Turkey, Slovenia, and Latvia. The award-winning transport pallet by G. Gühring GmbH & Co.KG Verpackungstechnik scored in the cost-effectiveness category. This concept was convincing due to the sum of its improvements such as the cost reduction for packaging materials, the increase of container utilization, the elimination of additional securing of cargo and the safe handling in logistics. This was achieved by adapting the pallet shape to the front loader swing arm and the possibility of nesting the newly shaped pallets inside each other, the jury explained.
Gold Awards and presentation of prizes
Via the Gold Awards, the jury has the opportunity to additionally recognize particularly groundbreaking innovations from among the packaging award winners. “The jury has again made use of this option this year,” informs Bettina Horenburg. She adds that the winners of one of the Gold Awards will be announced at the festive awards ceremony on the first day of FACHPACK in Nuremberg.
