Innovation Award for Iced Coffee in a cardboard can

The Swedish family business Löfbergs AB received the SIAL Innovation Award for its organic coffee in environmentally friendly packaging.

On the occasion of the international food and beverage trade fair SIAL in Toronto, the Swedish coffee roaster Löfbergs AB was presented with the Bronze Award for its iced coffee range in the SIAL Innovation Competition 2019. With over 1,000 exhibitors and around 18,000 trade visitors, SIAL in Toronto is one of the largest trade fairs for the food industry in North America.

The jury was impressed not only by the good taste and natural ingredients, fair-trade organic coffee, but above all by the cylindrical packaging too. Thanks to a metallic effect, it looks like a metal can, but is in fact made of sustainable cardboard. This packaging with the product name CartoCan is produced using a liquid packaging system of the German firm Michael Hörauf Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG and a barrier-coated cardboard specially developed by the Finnish-Swedish Stora Enso group.

“We have received very positive feedback for both our products and our sustainability work. We distinguish ourselves by the fact that our coffee comes from controlled organic cultivation and Fairtrade. We have also developed new, more climate-friendly packaging. By replacing part of the fossil plastics with a plant-based alternative, the impact on the climate is reduced by around 30 percent,” explained Jon Leirfall Fornes, Country Manager at Löfbergs Canada.
