Packaging for Ice Cream Wins Design Competition

Packaging for popsicles wins design competition by BillerudKorsnäs: the packaging concept “Krystal Kream” was awarded two main prizes, the PIDA Gold Award and the “Highest Level of Innovation Award”.

To develop packaging that appeals to our senses: that was the challenge of this year’s competition. According to the jury, the winner “Krystal Kream” embodies this to perfection. “The overall concept is groundbreaking for the future because many consumers want alternatives to packaging materials that still dominate today – also in this market segment. material use, design, and handling are clearly different from existing packaging solutions. This new packaging idea could mark the start of a better future,” said the jury.

Hagen Neugebauer, who won the PIDA Gold Award at national level, automatically qualifies for the grand final on September 27, 2021, at Luxe Pack in Monaco. There, the international winner will be crowned. The winner of PIDA Germany will meet the winners of the other three semifinals there: from France, from Sweden, and from the UK and the USA. Three further prizes were awarded at PIDA Germany. The “Highest Level of Innovation Award” was given to the winner of the PIDA Gold Award, “Krystal Kream”. The jury explained its decision as follows: “It is a completely new packaging concept for the market segment in question. The material used, the innovative design and the outstanding functionality of the individual components, made from one and the same material and skillfully processed – all this convinced us.”

The “Highest Level of User Friendliness Award” went to the entry “hey Ocean!” by Nadine Voll and Judith Kellermann from Stuttgart Media University. Their packaging solution for bath bombs won over the jury due to its overall concept: “Here, the packaging tells a story about the product and takes consumers on a journey from start to finish. It uses different functions to accompany them. A packaging solution that, in combination with the product, surprises and delights the buyer at all stages of use.”

The “Highest Level of Sustainability Award” went to Vanessa Hoffer from Stuttgart Media University for the entry “Miss Fortune.” Her packaging solution for reusable razors convinced the jury: “With the goal of replacing plastic blisters with a purely cardboard solution, a new packaging for reusable razors was developed that not only fulfilled this goal, but also scored points in terms of visual and haptic perception and was also well thought out down to the last detail. Tamper resistance, child safety and product fixation were all considered in the design of the packaging, as was the overall aesthetic effect including graphic elements, embossing and lacquer effects.”

Winners were selected by a panel of prominent industry experts, who were very impressed with this year’s entries. “The concepts submitted by the teams were all extremely exciting and thoughtful. We discussed each competition entry in detail and debated at length before coming to a decision in each category. The participants can be very proud of themselves. What they have achieved under the extraordinary circumstances is great,” emphasizes Helmut Sieber von Edelmann, chairman of the jury at PIDA Germany.

Creative platform for packaging designers

BillerudKorsnäs, the company behind PIDA, organizes the competition in collaboration with leading universities and design colleges in Germany, France, the UK, Sweden, and the USA. The competition offers students the opportunity to work on a real packaging project under conditions as those familiar from a typical customer order. They also have the chance to present their ideas and creativity to professionals who attend the events each year for inspiration and to meet the packaging designers of tomorrow.

“With PIDA, we want to promote the development of packaging design and at the same time establish a meeting point for the industry and universities. This year marks the 16th year of the competition, and interest in PIDA continues to grow – both at universities and in the packaging industry,” reports Anders Gathu, Marketing Manager at BillerudKorsnäs.
