Henkel and Mondi Create Recyclable Refill Bag For Pril

Packaging and paper company Mondi and consumer goods giant Henkel have launched a completely recyclable packaging for Pril dishwashing liquid.

The two companies collaborated on a packaging solution for Henkel’s hand dishwashing detergent that allows plastic bottles to be refilled from flexible stand-up pouches. This supports Henkel’s sustainability goals of making 100 percent of its packaging recyclable or reusable and reducing 50 percent of new fossil plastic used by 2025.

Since January 2022, consumers have been able to purchase a new refillable home pump dispenser with refills in Mondi’s lightweight mono-material pouch. The flexible stand-up pouch reduces plastic consumption by 70 percent each time it replaces rigid plastic bottles and is easy to recycle where the required infrastructure exists.

The bag empties completely and leaves no residue. Mondi’s leak-proof pouch is ISTA 6 certified and is a highly durable package for in-store and online shopping.

Muriel Joncheray, Global Key Account Manager Consumer Flexibles at Mondi, says: “Sustainability is an important element in the homecare industry and a trend that is shaping the entire market and rightly so. At Mondi, we have defined sustainability targets in our MAP2030 action plan that focus on circular solutions. These include the goal of making 100 percent of our products reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025 – just like the recyclable stand-up pouch for Henkel. In line with our EcoSolutions approach, we worked very closely with the Henkel team to develop the new packaging. While the goal was to provide a solution that would help Henkel meet its sustainability goals, we also had to ensure that the materials and structure would protect the product during transport and on the shelf, prevent leakage, and minimize waste.”

Carsten Bertram, Head of Global Packaging Innovation Dishwashing at Henkel, added: “At Henkel, we understand the responsibility that comes with packaging. We are committed to promoting sustainable packaging and have set ourselves ambitious targets. Our strategy is based on the circular economy and focuses on integrating recycled plastics, reducing the amount of plastic packaging, develop reusable packaging and using fully recyclable packaging concepts to close the loop. With its expertise, Mondi was the obvious partner to help us in creating the best possible solutions – for the product, the planet, and the customers.”

The new packaging concept is being introduced for Henkel’s Pril brand in Germany. It is certified with the “Blue Angel,” the independent environmental label of the German government that sets strict standards for environmentally compatible products and services.
