Plastics industry approaches Brussels

In order to present their own plans for shaping the recycling cycle, 13 organisations held a first event on this highly topical issue.

The European Union is promoting the recycling economy in order to minimise the amount of plastic waste landing in the environment. In this context, 13 organisations from the entire plastics value chain launched their event “The EU Plastics Industries – Towards Circularity” on 11 December 2018.

The International Association for Soaps, Detergents and Maintenance Products (A.I.S.E.) the European Carpet and Rug Association (ECRA), the European Disposables and Nonwovens Association (EDANA), the European Federation of Bottled Water (EFBW), the European Manufacturers of Expanded Polystyrene (EUMEPS), the European Plastics Converters (EuPC), the Polyolefin Circular Economy Platform (PCEP), PET Sheet Europe, Petcore Europe, PlasticsEurope, Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE), Styrenics Circular Solutions (SCS), and VinylPlus were all involved. They all presented the status of their voluntary commitments and relevant undertakings to representatives of various media, non-governmental organisations and the European Commission.

According to this information, the European plastics industry, including the value chain associated with it, aims to turn its attention to a functioning circular-flow economy. A number of comprehensive, voluntary measures have already been developed to close the plastics cycle. It was agreed that the commitments made were would be monitored. In order to achieve the targets, the participants were also prepared to cooperate closely with the authorities and stakeholders.

Nevertheless, it was also pointed out that the achievement of the ambitious sustainability targets would not depend solely on the plastics industry, but would also require the support of national authorities, European legislators, and ultimately consumers. After all, the forced cycle can only work if more is collected and better sorted.
