Aluminum-free lid for dairy products from Arla

The world's largest dairy cooperative, Arla, uses Walki's paper-based lid material for yoghurt in Finland and for cottage cheese and crème fraiche in Sweden.

Thanks to Walki-Lid, dairy products can now be packaged without aluminum and on the basis of renewable and recyclable raw materials. The world’s largest dairy cooperative, Arla, uses Walki’s paper-based lid material for its 175 g Luonto+ yoghurt in Finland and for cottage cheese and crème fraiche in Sweden.

As the demand for sustainable packaging increases, companies are looking for innovative solutions that are recyclable, made from renewable raw materials and contribute as little as possible to CO2 emissions in production and logistics. For dairy products, this means finding an alternative to lids, that are traditionally made of aluminum. „We listen very carefully to the buyers of our products,“ explains Kati Janhunen, Brand & Category Manager at Arla. „Those who choose our Arla Luonto+ yoghurt, for example, regard sustainability as very important“.

Arla has accordingly opted for Walki-Lid as the lid material. With this quality, Walki, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of packaging solutions, is one of the few suppliers of aluminum-free, flexible, paper-based lid material for single-portion pots. „The product can be completely recycled in the normal paper recycling process,“ confirms Heikki Lumme, Flexible Packaging Business Line Manager. „And when it comes to the CO2 balance, Walki-Lid beats the conventional material, aluminum, many times over. “

Lids made of Walki-Lid material supplied by Walki are produced by the Finnish paper, converting and packaging company Pyroll. Marko Manu, sales manager at Pyroll, explains: „Walki-Lid has an excellent aroma, water vapor and gas barrier, is easy to peel off and yet is tear-resistant. It is easy to print and fits in well with our customers‘ packaging processes. In addition to the technical processability, the quality meets the food safety standards, protects the product optimally and guarantees its shelf life“.
