Fresh Fish in Express Delivery

Deutsche See, a specialist for fish and seafood, relies on transport packaging from Ecocool when shipping goods ordered online via external service providers. Their “Smartliner” keeps the required temperature stable for at least 24 hours.

Whether salmon fillets or crabs: Like many food producers, Deutsche See also offers direct shipping of products to consumers. Since 2013, the fish specialist has been handling orders from the online shop via its own refrigerated logistics. In the meantime, however, Deutsche See also dispatches products via external logistics service providers using express delivery. The “Smartliner” boxes from Ecocool help with this.

Insulating insert made of recycled PET

“We were looking for an economical solution for online retailing that meets our requirements of a constant cold chain for at least 24 hours,” says Ulrich Schulz, Business Development Manager at the online shop of Deutsche See GmbH. The core element of the Ecocool transport packaging is an insert for shipping cartons made of synthetic fleece. According to the manufacturer, the light polyester fibres have little effect on the transport weight. The insulating insert consists of 80 percent recycled PET bottles. In combination with cold packs, the insulating insert ensures that the desired temperature in the shipping carton is kept stable for at least 24 hours. Deutsche See uses the insulating fleece for different temperature requirements.

Variability in insulation performance

According to Ecocool, the insulating properties of the “Smartliner” were tested in a 55-hour trial at ambient temperatures between 18 and 32 degrees Celsius. In the climate chamber test, the insulation performance of packaging size S was below four degrees Celsius after 24 hours and below eight degrees Celsius for up to 44 hours. The unit can be fitted with four coolpacks, each weighing 500 grams. “The more Coolpack cooling elements there are in the carton insert, the longer the temperature remains stable during shipping,” emphasizes Dr. Florian Siedenburg, Managing Director of Ecocool. Products with different temperature requirements can also be shipped in one package, using the “Smartcooler” shipping bag. This also consists of a recycled insulating fleece, can be combined into a bag with the help of a special envelope and sealed with a sticker.
