Amazon Tests “Secure Delivery Bag”

Online retailer Amazon is testing a new delivery option. The “secure delivery bag” is intended to protect packages delivered in the absence of the recipient from theft.

According to media reports, the online giant Amazon is currently testing a “secure delivery bag”. The option is intended to protect packages delivered in the absence of the recipient from theft. Customers in Germany invited by the retailer to take part in the test who are expecting a shipment are to place a thin metal bag on their doorstep. This is secured with a combination lock and an extension cord attached to the bag. This should protect customers from having their package stolen while they are away.

As an additional security factor, a numerical code can be set on the delivery bag. Customers define this code themselves and tell it to the delivery person when they place their order, so that he or she can put the ordered item in the bag. Once the package is in the closed delivery bag, it cannot be opened again. How the bag is opened and closed, both technically and manually, is explained to Amazon customers in the test with the help of an instruction manual.

However, most customers will still have to expect the parcel carrier to ring the doorbell – and if they’re not at home, the parcel will usually be with a neighbor or at a pick-up station.
