FC Bayern Munich receives award for reusable cups

The football club FC Bayern Munich has received the Reusable Award from the European REUSE Conference for its switch to reusable cups for drinks at home matches in the Allianz Arena. The award ceremony took place at the end of the REUSE Conference in Brussels. The organizers – the organization Environmental Action Germany (DUH), the European Federation of Associations of Beer and Beverage Wholesalers (CEGROBB), the German Association of Private Breweries and the Reloop platform – were awarding the prize for the first time. The aim is to reward sustainable solutions that protect the climate and strengthen the principle of reusable packaging as a social standard.

Barbara Metz, Deputy Federal Managing Director of DUH, praised FC Bayern Munich as a club that „sets standards in Europe, not only on  the pitch, but also in waste prevention“. The introduction of the reusable cup system in the Allianz Arena is an example of „combining environmental protection and fun in the stadium“.

„The Allianz Arena occupies a special position in top national and international football as an environmentally friendly, ultra-modern sports facility,“ stated Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, CEO of FC Bayern Munich. „Ever since 2006, our sustainably managed stadium has been audited annually in accordance with the strictest guidelines in Europe – the EMAS Scheme. We are currently putting together a new package of sustainability goals and projects to further strengthen our ecological and social competence. I am very pleased that FC Bayern Munich’s commitment to environmental protection has been rewarded with an award in Brussels“.

FC Bayern has been a member of the Climate Alliance of the Free State of Bavaria since 2015. The conversion to reusable cups for beverages was organized in 2018 with help from the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment too. Jürgen Muth, Managing Director of Allianz Arena München Stadion GmbH, accepted the Award on behalf of FC Bayern.

„I can tell you that the switch from disposable to reusable cups was very well received by the more than 1.5 million spectators who attended our home games last season,“ summed up Jürgen Muth addressing the conference participants in Brussels. „In an ever-expanding network – which also includes FC Bayern partners such as Siemens, Zumtobel, Audi and SAP – we discuss all current environmental issues and seek answers to the questions facing us today. The Reusable Award motivates us to continue working towards sustainability goals.“
