FachPack picks “Environmentally friendly packaging” as key theme

The FachPack trade fair from 24-26 September in Nuremberg will focus on sustainable packaging. The most important drivers are consumer demand for more environmentally friendly packaging and the increasing demands placed on its recyclability.

The new German Packaging Act, the EU plastics strategy and the voluntary commitment of the trade are all reasons to make sustainability a focus of FachPack, says Cornelia Fehlner, Head of FachPack at NürnbergMesse GmbH, nothing that there was already great interest in the subject of sustainability at FachPack 2018. This is the first time that FachPack, “the home of the European packaging industry”, has set a key theme for annual trade fair, under the title “Environmentally friendly packaging”. From 24-26 September 2019, the European trade fair for packaging, processes and technology will enable companies from the packaging industry to present their innovative solutions and new approaches and discuss them with their customers – at the stands, in lecture forums, at special shows and at award ceremonies.

“To make the key theme of environmentally friendly packaging more tangible, we have divided it into four areas,” explains Cornelia Fehlner. “Specifically, the focus is on recycled packaging, resource-saving materials, reusable packaging and systems, and new environmentally friendly processes. Products that fit into one or more of these four categories are specially marked in the exhibitor and product database on the FachPack website. Visitors interested in recycled packaging, for example, can compile a list of all relevant products from companies and get information in advance. The exhibitors in the four key theme categories will also be specially marked at the trade fair, making them easy for interested visitors to find. “Anyone in Europe who manufactures or packages consumer or industrial goods should take a look at the fair,” says Fehlner. Around 45,000 visitors are expected and 1,600 exhibitors have already registered.

Lectures in forums

Interested visitors will be able to find out more about the key theme not only at the trade fair stands, but also in the two forums, with around 70 specialist presentations on all three days of the fair. In the PackBox Forum in Hall 7, which deals in general with the topics of packaging, packaging printing and finishing, the first day of the fair, 24 September 2019, will be devoted to sustainability.

The TechBox Forum in Hall 4 will focus on packaging technology and logistics, and will also highlight the subject of recycling. The Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV, for example, will deal in detail with the current technological challenges of recyclable packaging. Further presentations will focus on biodegradable and sustainable new packaging materials. The Packaging Excellence Center (PEC) looks at how the ecological footprint of plant operators can be reduced through sustainable concepts.
